Istanbul (ANTARA) -
Istanbul, Türkiye, was rocked by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake, Yeni Safak newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has confirmed the information.
After that, aftershocks struck. The powerful quake caused residents to rush to the streets, power outages and internet disruptions, RIA Novosti correspondent reports.
Strong tremors began at around 12:50 p.m. local time (16:50 GMT). RIA Novosti correspondents felt the tremors in the Atakoy district of western Istanbul: walls shook, chandeliers swayed, furniture creaked and electricity went out for a while.
Residents waited for the tremors to subside before running out of the building via emergency stairs.
Then, at 13:03 local time, another aftershock was felt, although with a weaker intensity, causing people to move away from buildings.
Meanwhile, Türkiye's Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) said an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.4 was felt in Istanbul after the main quake.
